Threefold Means to Acquire True Knowledge

Some people believe in knowledge from scriptures that has stood the test of time. They need to verify whether the knowledge still holds good. Most people believe what they see. However, perception is based on experience. Lawyers often prove the statement of an eyewitness wrong. “True knowledge comes from direct perception through senses, unbiased inference, and reliable text or speech. True knowledge is through the threefold means only” (4 – 1).

1. Direct perception through senses: Perception requires experience of inputs through senses. Hence are the proverbs, ‘Seeing is believing’ and ‘Proof of the pudding is in the eating’.

2. Unbiased inference: Inference is by drawing logical conclusion. Hence the saying, ‘There can be no smoke without fire’. This is evident from everybody’s experience.

3. Reliable text or speech:The word ‘texte’ in Old French means ‘holy scripture’. Ancient people believed the scriptures blindly. Correct interpretation of a scripture gives the knowledge that has stood the test of time. Words of wisdom, from those who have experienced the truth, are also reliable. Experience of the result is proof enough. ‘Perception is application of senses to determine the nature of an object.A text is a scripture that people follow to live happily and that has stood the test of time’ (4 – 2). Result from practice confirms the reliability of a text. Then one learns from the scripture as a disciple.

The three means to knowledge also constitute the threefold test to know whether the knowledge is true. When direct perception is not possible, knowledge is acquired from time-tested texts and through inference. However, understanding merely from text or speech is difficult and the knowledge is limited to awareness only.
